Choosing a Newborn Photographer Isn't Really About Choosing a Photographer | Gillard Studios, South Wales

There are moments in this job that stay with you.
Not because of the photograph we've created, but because of what happens around it.
A few weeks ago, a mum arrived at the studio looking exhausted. You could see she'd barely slept. She apologised for being late, apologised for her hair, apologised because she'd had to stop twice on the journey to change her baby.
Before we'd even started, she said, "I'm so sorry... I just don't feel like myself."

If we're honest, we hear that quite a lot.
The first few weeks of becoming parents are beautiful, but they're also messy. They're emotional. They're overwhelming. The days blur into one another and somehow morning becomes evening before you've even managed to drink a hot cup of tea.
Halfway through her session, while her baby slept peacefully, she sat on the sofa with a coffee.
The studio was quiet.
For the first time that morning, she wasn't changing a nappy, timing a feed or wondering why the baby wouldn't settle.
She was simply... breathing.
We carried on photographing her little one while she watched from across the room, smiling every time we gently settled him back to sleep.
When she left, she thanked us for the photographs.
But then she said something we'll never forget.
"I didn't realise how much I needed this."
Not the photographs.
The experience.
And that's something we've thought about ever since.
Because when parents start looking for a newborn photographer, the conversation almost always begins with price.
We completely understand why.
Babies are expensive. There are cots to buy, prams to choose, tiny clothes they'll outgrow in a matter of weeks and a hundred other things competing for your budget.
It's sensible to compare prices.
But sometimes we wonder if it's the wrong question.
Perhaps the better question is...
How do you want to remember these first few weeks?
Because the truth is, you'll probably forget what your newborn photography session cost.
What you'll remember is walking into a warm studio after weeks of sleepless nights.
You'll remember seeing your baby looking impossibly tiny, curled up just as they did before they were born.
You'll remember how your partner looked across the room with that smile that says, "Can you believe we made this little person?"
You'll remember the tiny yawn.
The little stretch.
The way their whole hand wrapped around just one of your fingers.
And when you open your album years later, those memories come
rushing back.
Not because of the paper they're printed on.
Because of how they make you feel.
That's why we believe choosing a newborn photographer isn't just about choosing someone whose work you like.
It's about choosing someone you'll trust during one of the biggest moments of your life.
Someone who understands that you're not just another booking in the diary.
Someone who knows that this isn't just another Tuesday morning.
It's the only Tuesday morning your baby will ever be ten days old.
There will always be photographers at different price points, and that's exactly as it should be. Every family has different priorities and every photographer offers something different.
But if you're someone who believes memories are worth protecting...
If you're the kind of person who already catches yourself staring at your bump because you can't believe how quickly they're growing...
If you know, deep down, that these days won't last forever...
Then don't just choose based on cost.
Choose the experience you'll still be talking about years from now.
Because long after you've forgotten what you paid...
You'll remember exactly how those first precious days felt.
And sometimes, that's the greatest gift a photograph can give you.
