When should we book our newborn photography session?

We recommend booking your newborn photography session during your second or early third trimester to guarantee availability in our Pontypridd studio.

Because newborn photography takes place within a small window, we only take a limited number of sessions each month. Reserving your space during pregnancy ensures everything is ready when your baby arrives.

We simply pencil in your due date, and once your little one is here, we confirm the exact session date.

What if our baby arrives early or past their due date?

That’s completely fine - babies rarely arrive exactly on schedule.

When you book, we reserve space around your due date rather than a fixed day. Once your baby arrives, you just let us know and we’ll arrange your session within the ideal newborn window.

There’s always flexibility built in.

What is the best age for newborn photos?

The ideal time for newborn photography is when your baby is between 5–28 days old.

During this stage, babies are usually sleepier and naturally curl into those beautiful, timeless poses. However, if your baby is a little older, please don’t worry — we can still create stunning portraits in our South Wales studio. Every baby is different, and we always work around your little one.

Is newborn photography safe?

Newborn photography is safe when carried out by a properly trained and experienced professional.

We have completed specialist newborn photography training and are proud to have received multiple industry awards for our work and professional standards (you can view our training and awards on our website).

Every session at Gillard Studios is completely baby-led. We never force a pose, and your baby is always fully supported. If your baby needs feeding, soothing or a cuddle, we pause - there is never any rush.

Our Pontypridd studio is kept warm and comfortable, and you will always be close to your baby throughout the session.

Some advanced poses you may see online are created using composite techniques (multiple safely supported images blended together). We never place your baby in an unsafe position to achieve a photograph.

Your baby’s wellbeing will always come first with us.

What if our baby won’t settle?

Please don’t worry - this is completely normal.

We allow plenty of time for feeding, cuddling and settling. With years of experience photographing newborn babies across Cardiff and South Wales, we understand how to create a calm and relaxed environment for both baby and parents.

There is never any pressure for your baby to “perform”.

Can siblings and parents be included in the newborn session?

Absolutely - in fact, we encourage it.

Newborn photography isn’t just about your baby, it’s about your growing family. Those first cuddles as a new big brother or sister, the way you hold your baby in those early days - these are the images that become truly priceless over time.

We gently guide sibling and family portraits so they feel natural and relaxed. Sessions are never rushed, and we allow time for little ones to warm up and feel comfortable.

What should we wear for the session?

We provide everything needed for your baby, including beautiful wraps, blankets and carefully selected studio outfits.

For parents and siblings, we recommend simple, neutral tones to create soft and timeless family portraits. We’ll guide you before your session so everything works beautifully together.

How long does a newborn photography session take?

Our newborn sessions typically last 2–4 hours.

This allows plenty of time for feeding, cuddling and settling without any pressure. We work entirely at your baby’s pace to ensure a relaxed and enjoyable experience for families travelling from Pontypridd, Cardiff and across South Wales.

How much does newborn photography cost in South Wales?

Our newborn photography session is £100.

This includes your personalised studio session, use of our curated wraps and props, professional editing, and a private viewing appointment where you can choose your favourite images.

We offer a range of collections that include digital images, fine art prints, bespoke albums and statement wall art. Most of our families invest between £399 and £1,200, depending on how many images and products they choose.

There is no need to commit to a package before you see your images - you simply select what you love after your viewing appointment.

We also offer flexible payment options, allowing you to spread the cost over up to 12 months if you wish.

We aim to make the entire experience feel relaxed, transparent and pressure-free from start to finish.

Where is your newborn photography studio located?

Our studio is based in Pontypridd, South Wales, and is easily accessible from Cardiff, Caerphilly, Merthyr Tydfil and surrounding areas.

We’ve created a warm, welcoming space designed especially for new and expectant parents.

Do you offer maternity and milestone sessions as well?

Yes, we do. Many of our families choose to document their journey into parenthood with both maternity and newborn sessions.
